The CORE Programme team (Brazil) organised their in-person training course on Qualitative Research in Oral Health from March-May 2025. This course was conducted as part of the training and capacity building component of the CORE Programme.
Main Outcomes Observed
The course was essential in demystifying the field of qualitative research for those already working in research.
For graduating students and public health professionals, the course promoted engagement, and this group felt encouraged to seek mentoring and, if possible, to apply for a Master's programme.
The group’s overall assessment is that they feel motivated to participate in future editions of courses offered by CORE Brazil.
Course Objectives
To address the basic characteristics of qualitative research in health, discussing its potential contributions to the field of health.
To discuss and experience, in an introductory way, the development of a qualitative research project, as well as covering aspects related to the preparation of instruments for conducting interviews (individual and group) and data analysis.
Participant Profile
Members of the CORE Brazil team, professors at local universities, oral health professionals from the public health service, and final-year undergraduate dentistry students. In terms of participant sex, 21 were female and 6 were male.
Challenges & Strategies Adopted
One challenge faced was how to keep the group engaged throughout the two daily sessions. To address this, meals were provided on site, so participants did not need to leave the building, which helped maintain course attendance.
Course Evaluation
The feedback from attendees was positive. The majority stated that the course delivery was excellent and exceeded their expectations, provided an in depth introduction to the subject and, featured a clear and coherent methodological approach. All attendees were motivated to attend future courses in the series.
